1st June is World Milk Day, and while we often picture cats happily lapping up a bowl of milk, the truth is, most cats shouldn’t drink it!

At Applaws, we want to help cat owners make the best choices for their pets. So, what kind of milk (if any) is safe for cats? Here’s what you need to know.

Can cats drink regular cow’s milk?

No, most cats are lactose intolerant. While kittens can digest milk from their mothers, adult cats lack the enzyme lactase, which helps break down lactose in dairy products. This can lead to:

  • Upset stomach (vomiting or diarrhoea)
  • Bloating & gas
  • Discomfort & dehydration

Tip: Even if your cat seems to tolerate cow’s milk, it has no nutritional benefits for them and is best avoided.

What type of milk is safe for cats?

If you want to treat your cat to some milk, choose cat-friendly alternatives:

  • Specially formulated cat milk – Lactose-free and enriched with nutrients.
  • Goat’s milk (in small amounts) – Lower in lactose but still not necessary.

Tip: Kittens under 8 weeks old should only drink their mother’s milk or a kitten-specific milk replacer, not cow’s milk.

The best drink for cats? Fresh water!

The healthiest and safest drink for cats is plain, fresh water. Make sure your cat has:

  • A clean water bowl refreshed daily
  • Multiple water sources around the home
  • A cat water fountain if they prefer running water

Tip: If your cat isn’t drinking enough water, try Applaws wet food to help keep them hydrated.
