Cats are often seen as solitary creatures, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need connection. Many cats form close bonds with their people and can feel lonely when left alone for long periods.
If you’ve ever asked yourself “is my cat lonely?” here’s how to tell, and what you can do to help.
Signs your cat might be feeling lonely:
- They become more vocal, especially when you leave or return.
- Their eating habits change, either eating less or more than usual.
- You notice clingy behaviour or, at the opposite end, withdrawal and hiding.
- They groom excessively or show signs of stress like scratching or restlessness.
These behaviours might also indicate other issues, so it’s always worth checking in with your vet.
Why do cats get lonely?
While cats enjoy quiet time, they also rely on daily interaction. Indoor cats or those used to human companionship are more likely to feel the absence of company. Changes in routine, a loss of a companion, or long work hours can all contribute to this feeling.
How to support a lonely cat:
- Make time each day for play, grooming, or simply sitting near them.
- Use puzzle feeders or rotating toys to add mental stimulation.
- Create spaces where they can watch the world, like a window perch.
- Leave something familiar behind when you go out, such as a blanket or shirt.
- If your cat is very social, and your lifestyle allows it, you could consider getting a second cat, but make sure you talk to your vet or cat behaviourist first about the best way to do this.

Recognising when your cat might be feeling lonely is just one part of supporting their overall wellbeing. Every meow, stretch or moment of calm tells you something about how they feel.
