Can Cats Eat Chocolate?
Chocolate may be a treat for us, but it’s toxic for cats. Learn what makes it harmful, what signs to look out for, and what to do in an emergency.
27/06/2025
Chocolate is toxic to cats – even a small amount can be harmful. With World Chocolate Day (7th July) approaching, here’s a reminder that while chocolate is a treat for us, it can pose serious health risks to our feline friends.
What makes chocolate toxic to cats?
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, two compounds that cats can’t metabolise effectively. Ingesting even a small amount can lead to:
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Restlessness or rapid breathing
- Increased heart rate
- Tremors or seizures
Dark chocolate is particularly dangerous for cats due to its higher theobromine content.
What happens if my cat eats chocolate?
If your cat eats chocolate, you may notice:
- Hyperactivity
- Panting or drooling
- Muscle twitching or collapse
Symptoms can appear within hours, so it’s important to monitor your cat closely if you think they might have eaten some.
What should I do if my cat eats chocolate?
Contact your vet immediately, and let them know what type and how much chocolate your cat has eaten. Even small amounts can be dangerous, so acting quickly is essential to reduce the risk of serious health problems.
Instead, keep the chocolate for yourself and treat your cat to something made just for them. Applaws natural treats are full of real meat and free from anything artificial. Just simple, tasty goodness your cat will love.
