”Do this.’ ‘Don’t do that.’ Being a pet parent is hard work at times. While the internet is brimming with endless guidance on how best to look after our fur babies. All that information can sometimes be a little bit overwhelming, with countless contradictions leading to more questions than answers.

The ‘wet vs dry dog food’ debate is one topic you’ll always find plenty of online opinions on.
What do we think at Applaws?

Short answer: We believe it’s more than ‘ok’ to mix the two; in fact we think it’s a must!

Here’s the slightly longer answer:

Are there specific benefits of mixing wet and dry food together?

Buying dog food tends to come down to a straight choice between ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ for most people.
Both have their advantages, and both are firm favourites with our four-legged friends.

Dry food, also known as kibble, is nutritious, convenient, and can be bought in bulk without spoiling quickly. Packed with goodness, its high energy content means only small portions are needed for our hungry chums. And it’s incredibly easy to measure out, so you know to the gram how much your dog’s devouring. Kibble’s crunch factor also makes it a brilliant natural teeth cleaner.

Wet food on the other hand is literally dripping with taste. Recipes come bursting with flavour, and there’s a huge amount of variety.

Chicken Stew with Carrots, Green Beans & Potato Tin, Beef Stew with Carrots, Peas & Kidney Beans Tin, Lamb with Pumpkin, Sweet Potato & Peas in Jelly Tin. And that’s to name just a few from the Applaws Taste Toppers range.

The extra moisture in wet food boosts hydration levels, and the softer texture can be easier for dogs to eat and digest. Two of the most important things to remember when prepping our doggy’s dinners are –

  1. They’re getting all the nutrients they need from a wide range of high-quality ingredients.
  2. They’re enjoying their food.

This is why mixing wet and dry food can be so beneficial. It’s the best of both worlds.
Combining the two will bring balance to your dog’s diet, offering up a complete and more rounded mealtime that covers a wider range of nutrients.

More variety, different textures, contrasting flavours. You won’t be able to stop their tails wagging.

Tips for mixing dry dog food

When changing your dog’s diet, remember to take it slow.

Introducing new or different types of food can be a real tummy-troubler for pets so keep the transition gradual.
If they’ve been eating nothing but dry food, and you want to freshen things up with wet, try mixing in just a tiny amount at first. Keep adding a touch more each day, and after a week or two they should be good to carry on.

If you don’t want to mix wet and dry food in the same bowl, that’s fine. You don’t even have to serve them up at the same time.
Dry food in the morning followed by wet food in the evening is a good way to cover all bases.
Alternatively, you can leave dry food out throughout the day, letting them snack on it whenever they wish – it doesn’t spoil, and you can manage portions.
